Everything You Need to Know About Fixed Wireless Internet

Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISP) supply a fast, reliable, cost-effective internet solution for people in underserved areas.
What Is Fixed Wireless Internet?

Quick Definition

Fixed wireless internet, also called Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), is broadband delivered over the air from a nearby access point (often a tower) to a fixed receiver installed at your home, farm, or business. Unlike mobile wireless, it’s designed to be your primary fixed internet connection with consistent performance for streaming, work-from-home, and everyday use.

WISPs provide fixed wireless internet service, which is different from the wireless internet used by mobile phones. Fixed wireless internet is a high-speed, reliable internet service for rural and underserved areas. Internet is sent from the main access point (typically supplied with high-speed fiber-optic lines) to individual receivers installed at businesses, farms, and homes.

In the simplest terms, a WISP broadcasts internet from one access point to multiple fixed locations. As a result, WISP users will experience speeds comparable to or greater than most cable providers, and surpass the speeds available from DSL and Satellite.

Tip: You might also hear this described as fixed broadband internet, because it’s broadband service delivered to a fixed location (your address), not on-the-go like a phone plan.

How Does Fixed Wireless Internet Work?

We provide Fixed Wireless Internet by using a wireless network to broadcast our internet signals from one access point to our customer’s fixed location. Our main access points (the transmitters) can be affixed to cell towers or other high structures that are backed by a high-speed fiber connection. The transmitters then send the high-speed internet signals to receivers that are installed at our customer’s property.

Once the signal has reached our customer’s property, the internet will be transmitted for use from the modem located inside the home or business. Service is then broadcasted to various devices by connecting to the modem wirelessly or through a direct ethernet cable connection.

How it works (step-by-step)
  • Fiber backhaul to the tower/access point (the “source” of the internet)
  • Tower transmits a wireless signal to your location
  • A receiver/antenna at your property captures the signal
  • Your modem/router distributes internet throughout the building (Wi-Fi or ethernet)
How Line of sight and distance affect availability

In most cases, our customers need to be within a 10-mile radius of an access point and have a line of sight from your reception device to one of our access points. There cannot be buildings, trees, hills, or other large obstructions in the path of the receiver and transmitter.

Here’s more on the equipment needed to receive fixed wireless internet.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) vs 5G Fixed Wireless Internet

You’ll sometimes see these terms used interchangeably, but they can mean different things depending on the provider:

  • Fixed Wireless Access (FWA): the broad category—broadband delivered wirelessly to a fixed location (often via WISPs and dedicated fixed receivers).
  • 5G wireless internet: commonly refers to carrier-based home internet delivered over 5G/4G cellular networks.

Both can be “fixed internet,” but the experience can differ based on:

  • whether the connection is dedicated to a fixed receiver vs shared cellular capacity
  • how network congestion is handled
  • what equipment is installed at the property
  • latency and consistency during peak hours

If your main goal is a stable home/business connection (not portability), fixed wireless broadband is a great option.

Fixed Wireless Internet vs Other Options (Quick Comparison)

Here’s a quick overview of some different types of internet options that may be available to you.

Fixed wireless vs mobile wireless (phone hotspot / mobile broadband)

Mobile wireless prioritizes portability. Fixed wireless prioritizes consistent home/business performance. Fixed wireless is typically lower latency and better stability for streaming, calls, and work tools.

Fixed wireless vs satellite

With fixed wireless internet, your on-site antenna uses radio waves to connect to a nearby tower (typically no more than ten miles away), giving you access to high-speed internet.

Satellite internet is reliant on signals from satellite dishes orbiting Earth about 20,000 miles away. Satellite internet often offers competitive pricing, however, it does typically include data caps and has high latency. This often makes voice or video calls through the internet and gaming difficult.

With Upward Broadband, there are no data caps, just a high-speed connection with low latency.

Fixed wireless vs DSL

DSL availability can be widespread, but speeds and reliability often drop with distance and aging infrastructure. Fixed wireless can deliver broadband performance without needing new wires run to every building and speeds are consistent.

What to Look For in a Fixed Wireless Provider

If you’re comparing fixed broadband providers or searching for the best fixed wireless internet, focus on the factors that actually affect your day-to-day experience:

  • Coverage & line of sight: Can the provider serve your exact address?
  • Real-world speeds: Download and upload matter (especially for video calls and remote work).
  • Latency: Lower latency is better for gaming, video calls, and responsive apps.
  • Data caps: Ask if there are limits especially if you stream frequently.
  • Installation & equipment: What gets mounted, where, and what’s included?
  • Support: Can you reach a real person quickly if something goes wrong?

Tip: Locally based fixed wireless companies often understand terrain, coverage quirks, and service expectations in rural communities.

FAQs

We want switching to Upward Broadband to be as simple as possible, so we’ve answered a few frequently asked questions. But if your question isn’t included or if you’d like more information, give us a call or send us a message.

What Is a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP)?

A fixed wireless internet provider extends reliable and cost-effective broadband internet services to remote farms, homes, and businesses. Your antenna, which supplies a home wireless router, will connect to our Point of Presence (PoP).

How Is It Different from Other Internet Suppliers?

Because wireless internet requires less infrastructure than DSL, fiber, cable, or satellite networks, it can be updated much more quickly, meaning a faster and more reliable service for residents and businesses in remote areas where other network types have not invested time and money.

How Is It Different From Satellite Internet?

With fixed wireless internet, your on-site antenna uses radio waves to connect to a nearby tower (just a few miles apart), giving you access to the internet. Satellite internet is reliant on signals from a dish orbiting Earth about 20,000 miles away. Satellite internet is often higher cost, includes data caps, and has high latency (delay), making voice or video calls through the internet difficult. With Upward Broadband, there are no data caps, just a high-speed connection with low latency. Watch this YouTube video to learn more.

What Locations Do You Serve?

Upward Broadband serves rural areas across south-central Pennsylvania. This includes parts of Chester, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Mifflin, and Lancaster County, PA. Find out if we serve your location here.

How Much Does It Cost?

Fixed wireless internet is an affordable alternative to other connection methods. With a clear pricing structure and no bundles or gimmicks, Upward Broadband lets you pay only for what you need and want – not all the extras. Check out our pricing here.

What Speed Do You Provide?

Upward Broadband offers 10/2, 25/5, 50/10, 100/20 for residential customers and 10/10, 25/15, 50/30, 100/60 for commercial customers. These speeds are listed as Download/Upload speeds in Mb per second.

How Secure Is Your Internet Service?

You can rest assured that your data is as safe on our fixed wireless internet as it is on cable or DSL systems. No matter who you get your internet from, it’s always a good idea to use anti-virus software and follow the recommended security settings for all your devices. We work to keep your wireless connection to our fiber optic backbone fast and reliable. Watch this YouTube video to learn more about how secure fixed wireless internet is.

How Reliable Is Your Internet Service?

Instead of relying on cables, you’re getting internet from radio waves. That means no one can accidentally cut your access with a severed wire. That makes fixed wireless internet worthy of your trust.

How Far Does the Signal Reach?

The signal’s reach is dependent on the local terrain and if there is anything obstructing your connection to the tower site. Typically the signal will cover a 10-mile radius of our tower.

What Equipment Do I Need?

Installing fixed wireless internet requires just a few pieces of equipment. An antenna is either placed on your roof or mounted to your building/home, which is what communicates with our access towers. Watch this YouTube video for a complete overview of the equipment that we provide our customers.

How Long Does It Take to Get Fixed Wireless Internet?

Fixed wireless internet is a quick and simple installation, and can often be installed just a few days after a service agreement is signed. If you’d like to get the ball rolling, contact us and we’ll let you know if your location is eligible. Then, we’ll install the receiving antennae and you’ll be good to go.

What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?

After installation, we won’t leave you on your own. Even though fixed wireless internet should be relatively maintenance- and upkeep-free, sometimes things happen. Rest assured you can call us with any of your issues, and you’ll get a real person (maybe even one of your neighbors!) that will make things right.

Does Weather Affect Fixed Wireless Internet?

Severe weather, in most instances, will not impact your internet connection. Severe, heavy winds have the potential to interrupt connections if your antenna system is blown out of place. Reputable WISPs install antennae with this in mind, ensuring the system can withstand extremely heavy winds.

Is your internet filtered to eliminate lewd and objectionable content?

To provide a safe internet environment for all ages, Upward Broadband will make a good faith effort to restrict access to material we consider to be objectionable such as pornography and illicit content.
